Episode 12 featured Tom Livatino, Loyola Academy (Wilmette, IL) Head Boys Basketball Coach, and as we were wrapping up our conversation, he asked if I was familiar with his assistant coach, Paul Pryma. While describing Dr. Pryma, the word Coach Livatino continually used was, "positive." I knew featuring Paul, who has over 35-years experience in education as a teacher, coach, and administrator, was a must.
My main takeaways from Dr. Pryma:
- Athletics are vital to the educational experience because it provides kids the opportunity to be problem solvers, critical thinkers, develop social skills, understand teamwork, and be themselves
- Schools are best when alignment exists between the classroom and athletics
- Schools should seek out teachers who have a passion for extra-curricular activities in order to provide inspiration to kids after school and build community
- If kids know they are loved, discipline issues won't exist and kids will want to come to school
