Season 2, Episode 4: Creating a Permanent Culture w/Caleb Parnin

Episode 54 features English teacher/head girls soccer coach at North Muskegon High School (MI), Caleb Parnin. In this episode, we discuss his unique journey from soccer player to coach, what he's learned from winning a state championship, and why he decided to make culture a yearly focus.

My takeaways:

  • Relationship between teacher-student differs from coach-athlete. Students have a tendency to look to the teacher to simply help with the grade; whereas, athletes look to coaches to help them improve, so they are "consuming everything about who you are...they get the whole thing. They get my strengths, they get my weaknesses, and they know who I am."
  • Athletes can sense authenticity of a coach.
  • "We're going to win state because of the way we treat each other, and that's what is going to set us apart from our opponents."
  • Culture has to be intentionally taught each year or it will be lost
